Beat — a simple and elegant screenwriting app for macOS

No distractions.
No nonsense.
Concentrate on writing

Beat was created by a screenwriter for screenwriters. It has a minimalist, distraction free UI and works lightning fast.

And best of all — Beat is totally free and open source!  Read more on the Beat website.

Also drop by the   Beat Discord community!

Features

  • Distraction-free writing
  • Nice outlining  tools (incl. scene cards  and timeline)   make it easy to structure your story
  • Uses the plain-text Fountain   format    to save your screenplays
  • Dark mode for the children of the night
  • Easy scene numbering
  • Autocomplete previously entered elements   (such as scene headings and characters)
  • Export to PDF or Final Draft
  • Import Final Draft, Highland and FadeIn files
  • Screenplay analysis
  • Autosave, auto everything
  • Plugin support

The app is totally free and will remain so, most importantly because free creative software supports and enables new artists with different backgrounds.

Source code is released under GNU Public License, which means it will always remain open. And anyone can help with development!

You can pay something if you want. All possible profits will be used to pay for hosting costs and  an occassional cup of coffee.

New: Plugin Pack

If you want to support Beat, you can now download a paid plugin pack with life-long updates.  The  pack contains some useful extensions to Beat, such as gathering scenes by storyline/character/heading contents, character appearance mapping, and the ability to import a screenplay from PDF (with varying results).

If you don't see the "Open Plugin Folder" menu item in Beat, update to the latest app version.

OMG, a script writing program! This would be prefect, except I'm on Windows. Are there any plans to make a Windows port?

KIT Scenarist is a good alternative on Windows.

Sorry for the VERY late answer – unfortunately this app is macOS native, so a Windows port is probably not happening anytime soon. :-(
